The two most important items regarding a workers compensation case are
First – be sure that your injury is properly reported to your supervisor and that a written report is made of the injury. Most, if not all, employers are going to have form specifically for this purpose. It would be good for you to have a copy of this form after it is filled out.
Secondly, make sure that you get referred to the company workers comp doctor ASAP and go to that doctor. It is common for injured to not immediately pursue or adequately keep up with their doctors appointments and treatment. Some people do this in an attempt to ” tough it out”, others just fail to be consistent. it is essential that you follow course of treatment prescribed by your doctor. The inference that is made for someone not following through on their treatment is that they are not really injured.
If there was going to be a third thing it would be to go ahead and speak with a lawyer early on. Many people wait intil they have a significant amount of problems thinking that their company is going to “do them right”. What you need to understand is that you are not dealing with your company, you are dealing with an insurance company or in the case of a self insured company, you are dealing with a professional adjuster. In either case, the goal is to save money. In the case of a serious injury, you are going to end up needing a lawyer so the better practice is to go ahead get that lawyer involved up front.
